Girls Will Be Boys Will Be Girls Will Be...

This coloring book/zine is the whimsical brainchild of Jacinta Bunnell and Irit Reinheimer, and offers sweet, clip-art inspired illustrations depicting children at school and at play, boys who cry and girls who get angry, accompanied by
commentary like, "Don't let gender box you in." A perfect alternative to gender-saturated Disney fare, it truly honors creativityand makes it okay to draw outside the lines.
—Bitch Magazine
If I had had this coloring book when I was little I think things would have been a little easier for me, and when youre little a little easier is a lot.
—Lynda Barry
This coloring book works on so many levels. On one hand, it's a perfect primer for young kids to start them on their way to questioning socialized gender roles. On another level, each page is original enough to give even the most seasoned gender bender a good laugh. The jokes are fresh and the art is clever.

Girls Will Be Boys Will Be Girls Will Be . . . Coloring
Book: A whole new way to deconstruct traditional gender
roles, this grassroots-style page-turner borrows images
from children's books, delightfully "improved," to
revolutionize our assumptions about growing up gendered:
"Baking is fun and all, but we can make a killer drum set
out of these pots and bowls," exclaims a little girl
clutching a mixing spoon; another caption reads,
"Sometimes the princess is saved by the girl next door." A
great and inexpensive gift for kids age 5 to 95.

About the book:
The antithesis of the "Dick and Jane" coloring book, Girls Will be Boys Will be Girls is a funny and provocative deconstruction of traditional gender roles. 32 original illustrations with captions like "Calvin, baking is fun and all, but we can make a rad drum set out of these pots and bowls" and "Don't let gender box you in" offer light-hearted, fun ways to deconstruct gender for both children and adults. The coloring book form is a subversive and playful way to examine how perversive stereotypes about gender are in every aspect of our lives, especially the ones that are so ingrained we don't even notice. Girls Will be Boys Will be Girls pokes fun at the tired constraints of gender normativity, and makes it okay to step outside the lines.

About the author:
It is Jacinta's sincere belief that the world would be a more benevolent and meaningful place to live if everyone was encouraged to build their own drum sets and to ride skateboards; and if no one was ever ridiculed for wearing rainbow-striped stockings and painting each other's toenails at sleep-over parties. Jacinta believes we could ALL stand to cry and wrestle more. Jacinta really likes that time the Barbies and GI Joes got their voice boxes switched.

Irit enjoys giving crew cuts to Barbies and remolding their plastic feet so they can fit into running shoes instead of high heels, enabling them to participate in more than just beauty contests. Irit also likes dressing up in dad's suits accented by mom's make-up for family meals and special events. Every year Irit takes "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" GI Joe to the local Gay Pride March, which is one of these special events.
