About the book: Free Agents looks at the work and lives of the closely-knit group of graffiti artists rooted in DC who were, in effect, free agents. These artists painted to please themselves, to gain recognition, and for the satisfaction of setting out to do something and carrying through.
With over 700 illustrations and in-depth interviews, Free Agents takes readers on a journey through the streets and train lines of DC, painting illegally on walls, crawling out of parents' windows and, occasionally, getting in and out of jail. It looks not only at the colorful work these artists created but why they did what they did, and in some cases, do what they do.
The art and stories in Free Agents were compiled by Roger Gastman, a DC local, graffiti writer and publisher of the magazine ,While You Were Sleeping. |
