Ladies and Gentlemen,

Join our own fabulous Reverend Jen tonight at the Bowery Poetry Club as she emcees the 10th Annual Mr. Lower East Side Pageant.

....Also in this email: David Rees (Get Your War On) and Matt Taibbi debate the question: How Doomed is America?
... An open mike event next week with Matthue Roth as well as a book release party for Lisa Klug, featuring Matthue Roth
... and the HUGE Williamsburg book party for Bad Habits: A Love Story, at Death by Audio, next weekend.

Read on for details.

-----------------
Calling All Dudes!
Reverend Jen Presents:
The Tenth Annual
Mr. Lower East Side Pageant
Thursday, November 13th, 10:00 P.M.
Bowery Poetry Club (308 Bowery) take the 'F' to 2nd Ave. or the '6' to Bleecker
$7

It's that time of year again – The time when autumn leaves fall gently onto the crumbling sidewalks and dudes who haven't seen the inside of a gym in over a decade suddenly want to look buff for the laydees…That's right, it's time for the annual Mr. Lower East Side Pageant whereupon the women and gay men of the Lower East Side choose one lucky man to rule the area south of Houston and east of Bowery.

The 10th annual Pageant will prove to be an extra-glamorous extravaganza, similar to the Ms. Universe Pageant, if all the contestants were hairy and liked Budweiser.
To compete in this cutthroat pageant, contestants need not live on the Lower East Side. (Because honestly, who can afford it anymore?) They simply must possess qualities, which would make them the proper representative of this neighborhood. (What those qualities are, I am not quite sure of…) They also must prepare for the following competitions: A 1-minute talent competition, a swimsuit competition, eveningwear and question and answer. Contestants must show up at 9:30 to sign up! Or they should e-mail revjen@revjen.com for details.

Last year's winner, comedian Sven Wechsler, will defend his crown (which comes complete with a detachable bong) in the most exciting event of the year. The chosen monarch will also receive a slice of pizza from Rosario’s, a six-pack of Budweiser, and the knowledge that he has been chosen by the people. Runner-up will receive the dubious honor of Mr. Tribeca, and will get to wear a smaller vagina-shaped crown throughout the year. There will also be prizes given for "best male tits," "congeniality" and "best nutsack."

Any woman or gay man who shows up is automatically a judge! Judges must be punctual because incomplete ballots will not be accepted! Reverend Jen, the Bob Barker of the L.E.S. will host the evening. Plus, there will be surprise celebrity judges and performers!

After last year's incredibly successful fair, Brooklyn's own Cannonball Press has again assembled an extraordinary menagerie of graphic artists under one roof, who will be present, displaying their prints, and selling them for $50 or less for two days only. Long-time champions of the affordable art cause, Cannonball Press has brought together these great artists as part of New York Fine Art Print Week so that New York can have a chance to see first-hand the incredible resurgence in affordable fine art printing that is happening across the country.

An entertaining sideshow will take place during the fair, featuring traditional Mexican music from Grupo Diamante Norteno, "deathgrass" titans the Black Death All-stars, a print-o-centric fashion show, emcee David Rees (of Get Your War On fame), a performance by the Amazing Hancock Brothers, and on-the-spot printing with Drive-By Press, which operates a mobile press out of the back of their van.
The best affordable art in town, guaranteed.
---------------------

Also, unrelated: a week from today, John Giorno will be participating in a wonderful evening at the Rubin Museum in Chelsea, in honor of his new Soft Skull book: Subduing Demons in America.

Happy Wednesday!

We wanted to let you know about a few events coming up this week and next, featuring David Rees, creator of Get Your War On, CAConrad, performance poet extraordinaire and author of Soft Skull's Deviant Propulsion and the upcoming Advanced ELVIS Course...and several others.

------------
First a reminder that Cristy C. Road, author and illustrator of Bad Habits: A Love Story, will be reading with Deb Olin Unferth and Keith Lee Morris, music by Bronwen Exter, at the Happy Endings series TONIGHT. Andrew Krucoff of Young Manhattanite recommends the reading. Check it out; it's pretty funny:

http://youngmanhattanite.tumblr.com/post/55624430/dabbling-in-sincerity-another-boring-gamble

The Happy Ending Series requires the readers to take one public risk, while the the musicians, who perform two short sets with their original, lyric-driven music, are required to play one cover song and try to get the audience to sing along. 7pm.

------------

And one other thing that's happening tonight that we want to tell you about: ABC No Rio, NYC's open venue for emerging artists, is hosting a huge benefit and auction tonight. The Soft Skull connection? Reverend Jen, the art star elf of the Lower East Side and author of our upcoming book I Did It For Science, will be MCing the event. Tickets are a little pricey since it's a fundraiser and all, but check out their site anyway; it's going to be a good event:

www.abcnorio.org/benefit2008

The gala will include a benefit auction of 60 works by Jacob Hashimoto, Lady Pink, Shirin Neshat, Claes Oldenburg, Tom Otterness, Kembra Pfahler, Andres Serrano, Kiki Smith, Chris Stain, Swoon and many others.

------------

And now about that Get Your War On event on Sunday (this Sunday, Oct 26): it's at the Bowery Poetry Club at 8pm. David Rees is hilarious. Get Your War on is now available in a third and definitive book edition from Soft Skull Press, and books will be on sale during the event. If you want to laugh, go to 236.com and look for their animated version of the cartoon strip.

Bowery Poetry Club
308 Bowery, New York, NY 10012
Admission: $8.00 but it's worth it

More info: David Rees was working a crummy magazine job when Operation: Enduring Freedom inspired him to make his cartoon "Get Your War On." The satire about the war on terrorism became an internet phenomenon. "Get Your War On" now appears in every issue of Rolling Stone. Sales of the two GYWO books have raised almost $100,000 for land mine removal in western Afghanistan. David's other comics include "My New Fighting Technique is Unstoppable" and "My New Filing Technique is Unstoppable."

----------

And another thing: CAConrad's got a few NYC events lined up in the next few days. CAConrad, the so-called "son of white trash asphyxiation whose childhood included selling cut flowers along the highway for his mother and helping her shoplift," is the author of "Deviant Propulsion" (Soft Skull, 2006). We're going to be publishing his incredible ode to Graceland, Advanced ELVIS Course, this spring. Check him out at http://CAConradEVENTS.blogspot.com.

Paul Beatty, author of SLUMBERLAND, has been hailed by The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times as one of the best writers of his generation. His previous novels are TUFF ("Unforgettable" - The Boston Globe) and THE WHITE-BOY SHUFFLE ("Laugh-out-loud funny and weep-in-silence sad" - The Nation). A former Grand Poetry Slam Champion of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Beatty is also the author of the poetry collections JOKER, JOKER, DEUCE and BIG BANK TAKE LITTLE BANK, and is the editor of HOKUM, an anthology of African-American humor.

"Furiously written… [SLUMBERLAND] is another bravura performance from the searingly talented Paul Beatty. A no-holds-barred comedic romp that crushes through the Fulda Gap of Black/White, East/West relationships like an M1 tank." -Junot Diaz

Matthew Sharpe's third novel, JAMESTOWN, was one of Publisher's Weekly's Best Books of 2007 - "a work of hectic brilliance and immense sadness," according to Salon.com. His previous novel, THE SLEEPING FATHER, was a Today Show Book Club pick, and has been translated into nine languages. Mr. Sharpe's previous books are the novel NOTHING IS TERRIBLE and the collection STORIES FROM THE TUBE. His stories and essays have appeared in Harper's, McSweeney's, and Bomb, among others.

"[A]n absurd hybrid of Cormac McCarthy's The Road and Walt Disney's Pocahontas... JAMESTOWN is an anguished lament for the whole bloody history of Western conquest, the stupidity and cruelty of invaders then and now... Jamestown is packed with marvelous material, moving and funny and deeply provocative." - Washington Post Book World
Happy Ending Reading Series
Featuring Cristy C. Road, author of Bad Habits: A Love Story

Wed, Oct 22, 7pm – 10pm
Happy Ending Bar (map)

Cristy Road, 25-year=old graphic artist and author of Bad Habits: A Love Story (Soft Skull) will be reading with Deb Olin Unferth from McSweeney's.

Michelle Tea calls Cristy's work “A party on the page, or a riot, or a revolution.”

About the Book:
In Bad Habits, Road takes us on an uncensored and largely autobiographical tour of an underground world, one full of wild characters and personal revolutions. We journey through New York City’s dive bars, we share drugs in dark bathrooms, and we spend long nights in strange beds. Road’s street psychopharmacology results in experiences that are both revelatory and tragic. In her circle, drugs are cheap, ubiquitous, and sometimes feel like the only way out. Writing in a tradition of some of the finest transgressive authors, such as Jean Genet, William S. Burroughs, and Kathy Acker, Road takes us deep inside the damaged soul and psyche of her young protagonist with language as violent as the street and sex as raw as the language. Somewhere along this hyperreal tour, our heroine learns to leave her bad habits behind and emerge stronger and more independent, clean and open to love. She’s still punk, but she’s punk by her own rules—and she finds that life can be about much more tha
n mere survival.

About the Event:
Have you ever been to Happy Ending Bar? You should! It's really not hard to get to: HAPPY ENDING BAR 302 Broome St Between Forsyth and Eldridge J,M,Z,F to Delancey B,D to Grand St See? You probably already know where that is. You've probably already even seen the bar, and not noticed it is, in fact, a bar. You probably thought it was some sort of work-out facility, like "CRUNCH!" This is a trick that has been played on you: over the bar's entrance hangs a pink awning with the words "health club" on it. Of course! But now you know! Join the New York Elite of "People In The Know" and show up for Cristy Road's reading!

SHOW STARTS AT 8pm ; DOORS OPEN AT 7pm
---------

Hi from Soft Skull!

There's a reading this Friday by New York poet John Giorno at the New Museum on the Bowery (address below). He will be reading from his newly published anthology of collected works from his fifty-year career, titled 'Subduing Demons In America: Selected Poems 1962–2007.' There will be a book signing and reception afterwards.

Check out the book here:
http://softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=978-1-59376-204-9

Giorno is known for his intense performances, having used found materials and montage techniques in the past to augment his explosively experimental work; in 1965 he founded Girono Poetry Systems to explore the use of technology in poetry.

Along with Giorno's work, the exhibit will also feature the fine art collection 'Live Forever: Elizabeth Peyton' and a comprehensive catalogue designed by the award-winning Graphic Thought Facility featuring essays by Iwona Blazwick, John Giorno, Laura Hoptman, and a large section of artworks, photographs, and ephemera organized by Peyton.

The reading is free with admission to the art exhibit.

Greetings, salutations, etc, etc!

We’re moving into October, right now. The thermometer is plunging downward but the coming events will keep you more than warm.

First off, Friday, October 3rd at 7pm Daphne Gottlieb will be at Bluestockings, 172 Allen Street between Stanton and Rivington. Daphne, Kate Bornstein, and Carol Queen will be discussing Sabrina Chapadjiev’s “Live Through This: On Creativity and Self-Destruction.” It’s a collection of essays, artwork, and prose from women dealing with violence, depression, and madness. You can read up on it here: http://sabrinachap.com/LTT

Also on Friday, Jeff Martin will do a reading at Barnes and Noble, 7:30 – 8:30pm in Greenwich Village, 396 Ave of the Americas and 8th Street. He’ll be reading from his new book, “The Customer is Always Wrong: The Retail Chronicles,” a collection involving the hilarious and unfortunate indignities of the underpaid and over-worked. Contributors to this anthology include Elaine Vets (Dead-End Job mystery series) and Jim DeRogatis (Let it Blurt).

Next week on Thursday, October 9th at 7pm Cristy C. Road will be at Barnes and Noble, 106 Court St. in Brooklyn. She’ll be promoting Bad Habits, her fictional memoir about lust, drugs, and self-discovery at the beginning of the 21st century. Her book’s a great read if you haven’t already checked it out. The illustrations are sexy and awesomely strange.

The next day, Friday, October 10th, David Rees will be reading from his new novel, “Get Your War On: The Definitive Account 2001-2008” at 7:30 pm at Word Books, 126 Franklin Street. The evening promises to be rife with politics, war, and topical discussions.

Thanks for your support. We couldn’t do this without you.
----------------
About the Author
San Francisco-based Performance Poet Daphne Gottlieb stitches together the ivory tower and the gutter just using her tongue. She is the editor of Fucking Daphne: Mostly True Stories and Fictions and Homewrecker: An Adultery Reader, as well as the author of the poetry books Kissing Dead Girls, Final Girl, Why Things Burn and Pelt. Her graphic novel Jokes and the Unconscious, featuring the artwork of Hothead Paisan's illustrator, Diane DiMassa, was called “brilliant and unsettling” by Publishers Weekly. Final Girl was the winner of the Audre Lorde Award in Poetry for 2003 from Publishing Triangle and was named one of The Village Voice's “Favorite Books of 2003.” Why Things Burn was the winner of a 2001 Firecracker Alternative Book Award (Special Recognition—Spoken Word) and was also a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award for 2001.
Gottlieb currently teaches at New College of California, and has performed and taught creative writing workshops around the country, from high schools and colleges to community centers. She received her MFA from Mills College.

-----------------
Kissing Dead Girls
Kissing Dead Girls is a kisstorical romangling that investigates myth, history, gender and states of being. Beginning with the province of legend, Kissing Dead Girls uses poetic inappropriacies to touch historical paragons and examine what touches us in them in vignettes casting the narrator as the lover of Josephine Baker, Amelia Earhart, Anne Frank, Frida Kahlo, Jonbenet Ramsey, Sharon Tate and Karen Carpenter. The "real" world fuses with the mundane as a liver is received in the mail by an unexpecting recipient; a woman replaces the moon with her heart; and a man finds himself a woman too dead to love. Gertrude Stein's work is co-opted and re-seen in an attempt to unpack the relationship between love and war; Walt Whitman makes a command performance in dismembered bits of forced formal verse; and "The Exorcist" and "The Devil in Miss Jones" are sutured together in an attempt to locate the true horror of desire. Fusing together pornography and postfeminist theory, transcrip
t and tell-all, these poems and stories reach off the page in search of what it is to be known, both to the masses and to the Other, even just one.

-----------------
Fucking Daphne
When Daphne Gottlieb first found herself the character in someone else's story she was intrigued; over time, as she appeared in more and more stories, she started to wonder about the implications of what was real and what wasn't. Did it matter that there were published stories of her having sex in bathrooms, vacant parking lots, on the balcony at a party in an old bordello? Did it matter whether or not they were true?
This question sparked the idea for Fucking Daphne, a collection that blurs the lines between reality and fiction and begs the question “who is the real Daphne?” A pill-popping wild child? A soft place to fall with a broken heart? A dreadlocked vixen?
Contributors include Hanne Blank, Stephen Elliot, Sarah Katherine Lewis, and Ariel Gore, who describe, watch, and engage with a character that is not Daphne Gottlieb; Daphne is a projection, a fantasy, a zeitgeist. We are all a multitude of people in bed. We are all Daphne.
Harnessing the playfulness of the hoax, the seductiveness of literature, and the edginess of the avant-garde, Fucking Daphne is unique in a culture hungry for sex, information, and most of all, understanding.

And a reminder about the street art opening at Exit Art this Saturday, as well:

SIGNS OF CHANGE: SOCIAL MOVEMENT CULTURES 1960s TO NOW
at Exit Art, 475 10th Ave, NY, NY, September 20 - December 6, 2008

Opening: Saturday September 20, 7-10pm

The opening will include live screen printing and a visit by the Tactical Ice Cream Unit.

In Signs of Change: Social Movement Cultures 1960s to Now, hundreds of posters, photographs, moving images, audio clips, and ephemera bring to life over forty years of activism, political protest, and campaigns for social justice. Curated by Dara Greenwald and Josh MacPhee as part of Exit Art's Curatorial Incubator, this important and timely exhibition surveys the creative work of dozens of international social movements.

Organized thematically, the exhibition presents the creative outpourings of social movements, such as those for Civil Rights and Black Power in the United States; democracy in China; anti-apartheid in Africa; squatting in Europe; environmental activism and women's rights internationally; and the global AIDS crisis, as well as uprisings and protests, such as those for indigenous control of lands; against airport construction in Japan; and student and worker revolution in France. The exhibition also explores the development of powerful counter-cultures that evolve beyond traditional politics and create distinct aesthetics, life-styles, and social organization.

Although histories of political groups and counter-cultures have been written, and political and activist shows have been held, this exhibition is a groundbreaking attempt to chronicle the artistic and cultural production of these movements. Signs of Change offers a chance to see relatively unknown or rarely seen works, and is intended to not only provide a historical framework for contemporary activism, but also to serve as an inspiration for the present and the future.

During the exhibition, there will be ongoing screenprinting workshops with guest artists and activists in collaboration with the Lower East Side Printshop as well as the following programs and events.

Exit Art is located at 475 Tenth Avenue, corner of 36th Street. Exit Art is open each Tuesday through Thursday, 10 am – 6 pm; Friday, 10 am – 8 pm; Saturday, noon – 8 pm. Closed Sunday and Monday. There is a suggested donation of $5.

It would be wonderful if folks came out to visit us at the festival this Sunday (Sept 14, 10am-6pm)! It's an outdoor thing at Borough Hall in Brooklyn, and lots of fun, and books will be on sale - not just Soft Skull books but books from many, many Brooklyn and general New York City indie publishers. We're looking forward to it.

Here's the link, so you can get an idea of what events are lined up and what publishers are participating.
