Happy Wednesday!

We wanted to let you know about a few events coming up this week and next, featuring David Rees, creator of Get Your War On, CAConrad, performance poet extraordinaire and author of Soft Skull's Deviant Propulsion and the upcoming Advanced ELVIS Course...and several others.

------------
First a reminder that Cristy C. Road, author and illustrator of Bad Habits: A Love Story, will be reading with Deb Olin Unferth and Keith Lee Morris, music by Bronwen Exter, at the Happy Endings series TONIGHT. Andrew Krucoff of Young Manhattanite recommends the reading. Check it out; it's pretty funny:

The Happy Ending Series requires the readers to take one public risk, while the the musicians, who perform two short sets with their original, lyric-driven music, are required to play one cover song and try to get the audience to sing along. 7pm.

------------

And one other thing that's happening tonight that we want to tell you about: ABC No Rio, NYC's open venue for emerging artists, is hosting a huge benefit and auction tonight. The Soft Skull connection? Reverend Jen, the art star elf of the Lower East Side and author of our upcoming book I Did It For Science, will be MCing the event. Tickets are a little pricey since it's a fundraiser and all, but check out their site anyway; it's going to be a good event:

The gala will include a benefit auction of 60 works by Jacob Hashimoto, Lady Pink, Shirin Neshat, Claes Oldenburg, Tom Otterness, Kembra Pfahler, Andres Serrano, Kiki Smith, Chris Stain, Swoon and many others.

------------

And now about that Get Your War On event on Sunday (this Sunday, Oct 26): it's at the Bowery Poetry Club at 8pm. David Rees is hilarious. Get Your War on is now available in a third and definitive book edition from Soft Skull Press, and books will be on sale during the event. If you want to laugh, go to 236.com and look for their animated version of the cartoon strip.

Bowery Poetry Club
308 Bowery, New York, NY 10012
Admission: $8.00 but it's worth it

More info: David Rees was working a crummy magazine job when Operation: Enduring Freedom inspired him to make his cartoon "Get Your War On." The satire about the war on terrorism became an internet phenomenon. "Get Your War On" now appears in every issue of Rolling Stone. Sales of the two GYWO books have raised almost $100,000 for land mine removal in western Afghanistan. David's other comics include "My New Fighting Technique is Unstoppable" and "My New Filing Technique is Unstoppable."

----------

And another thing: CAConrad's got a few NYC events lined up in the next few days. CAConrad, the so-called "son of white trash asphyxiation whose childhood included selling cut flowers along the highway for his mother and helping her shoplift," is the author of "Deviant Propulsion" (Soft Skull, 2006). We're going to be publishing his incredible ode to Graceland, Advanced ELVIS Course, this spring. Check him out at http://CAConradEVENTS.blogspot.com.
